History
"Michie Shire", as the farm has now been crowned, came about from a combination of ancestry, luck, and a love of Rockbridge County, Lexington and VMI! Bob's family is originally from Fancy Hill, Virginia about 5 miles from Michie Shire. The first Michie in Rockbridge was John Michie, greatgrandson of the infamous "Scotch" Johh Michie who first settled in Albemarle County in 1715, from Aberdeenshire Scotland. His son William was the original proprierter of Michie Tavern in Charlottesville.
Bob's GG grandfather, Charles Quintus Michie was born in 1837. He's buried just a few miles from Michie Shire at the Falling Springs Presbyterian Church. His son, John Chapman Michie lived in Fancy Hill and subsequently chose to go to VMI (class of 1887) and was the first of what is now four generations to attend VMI. His son, Hasell Norwood Michie, class of 1918 and Bob's father, H. Norwood Michie Jr., class of 1950B. Though Bob did not choose to go to VMI, despite every known bribe imaginable from his father, we are both very proud to have "reconnected" the VMI chain with our oldest son.
We all feel blessed and very fortunate to have the opportunity to bring the family back to Rockbridge County and enjoy the legacy and beauty of this very special place. Just in the few short months we've had Michie Shire our children have all quickly become attached and feel the draw of this relaxing retreat.
